Cabin

A Mountain Oasis

I have been a guest at ‘The Piney’ twice, and can’t wait to return.  It is one of the most unique vacation spots in North America. Situated on roughly 100 acres of private land atop the 3+million-acre White River National Forest, the views from this massive ‘cabin’ are absolutely incredible.  On a clear day you can see for over 60 miles in three directions, and it’s hard to believe you’re only about 12 miles from Vail as the eagle flies.  The hiking, birding and nature watching at The Piney are superb.  I saw moose, elk, deer, coyotes and lots of other wildlife during my visits.   The trout fishing and canoeing on nearby Piney Lake and river are fantastic. We used ATVs to go the 3 miles down to the Lake or you can hike down a mile through an Aspen Forest.  On our winter visit, we went snowshoeing and snowmobiling on the network of groomed trails in the national forest. The access was great due to their snowcat which groomed the road up to the cabin.

When you tire of outdoor adventures, there is comfort aplenty inside.  Although you are off the grid the WiFi is excellent, and the whole place is powered by solar, with propane back-up.  The Piney has a beautiful living room with a wood stove & cathedral ceiling, a big eat-in kitchen with a massive table that seats 12 people, four bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a giant loft upstairs with a big screen TV and pool table.

We stayed at the Piney Cabin for three days in the winter snowmobiling and backcountry skiing in the White River National Forest.  What a great trip with lots of groomed snowmobile trails and powder fields!  The backcounty skiing was through the Aspen trees with lots of powder.   The cabin was more like a lodge, really comfortable, and the views are amazing.  You would never guess
you were off grid and 12 miles in the backcountry of the National Forest.
